FOR306: Tropical Forest Conservation Field Course

Health and Safety

Dominica has perhaps the lowest health risk of any tropical country in the world. Diseases common in many parts of the tropics, such as Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, etc. DO NOT occur in Dominica, nor are there any venomous snakes or spiders.

No specific vaccinations are required for entering the country, though it is strongly recommended that you make sure your MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) and Tetanus boosters are up to date. In addition, you may want to get Hepatitis A and B vaccinations (you likely already have had these).

All forest field work involves some element of risk. Dominica does have some very steep terrain, and the combination of steep trails and lots of rain means the most likely cause of injury is a fall. It is important to exercise caution on the hikes and during field work. Bring good, worn-in hiking boots, and be prepared for a few arduous hikes during the trip.
