About the Centre
The Centre serves as a focal point for the expanding research into engineered wood and natural fibre composite materials. It solidifies and enhances the leadership position in high-performance organic fibre composite technology which UofT has developed over the last twenty years.
The goal will be to study engineering principles, physico-chemical and biological phenomena involved in designing sustainable engineered products using wood residues and renewable agro-fibers, model their design and performance to develop process technology, optimize and disseminate the results through network. Our intent is also to develop a test station for evaluation of new product performance and to develop novel standards for safe and long-term use of the bio-based composites in advanced applications such as in building construction, automotive interior and exterior parts, architectural arts and many performance consumer and sports goods. Bio-based Composite research is a building block to develop a world of sustainable technology that will reduce green house gas- emission, help achieving the goal of eco-balance and wild life preservation by engineering the effective use of forest and renewable resources in Canada. This centre will provide the foundation of a vibrant research and educational environment via networking opportunities.
